The early days of the de-duplication target market could be characterized as the Wild West according to 451 Research, with a slew of startups shooting it out in an emerging market with tremendous potential. That phase was followed by a consolidation phase where the big guns acquired startups in a buy-is-better-than-build spree. A few smaller companies remain, but it's becoming increasingly clear that the disk-based de-duplication market will likely be dominated by a few large players. 451 Research thinks that HP, although coming from behind, has a good chance of joining those ranks because of the single-product approach to end-to-end de-duplication in its homegrown StoreOnce software, which for the time being, appears to have the performance advantage.

A basic chatbot isn’t that hard to build. In JavaScript, write a public REST endpoint to connect a Facebook page to some chat logic (botly is a popular option) and deploy the whole thing to run on a cloud platform. Zoom out to the bigger picture, though, and you see that Facebook is just one channel. If you use Skype, Slack, Kik, and digital voice assistants, you’ll have to build six or eight of these endpoints straight away. And chatbots are being asked to handle ever more complex responses, so you better build on a platform of machine learning and natural language processing to keep up. That’s why the question enterprise developers should be asking is not “Which chatbot service do I start with?” but “Which platform will let me crank out a chatbot today and also support multiple channels and integrate with back-end systems as these chatbots take off?”

In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world

DevOps Unlimited needed to provide application infrastructure for a start-up client which was enjoying rapid growth with its new financial services product. Neither DevOps nor the client wanted to invest in, or manage, its own IT hardware, so a cloud service was the ideal solution. It would give the client the ability to grow rapidly without tying up time, resources and capital expense deploying dedicated IT hardware.

The need for robust network security is growing, but IT security teams, resources, and budgets are shrinking at many organizations. That doesn’t mean you have to scale down your growth or skimp on key IT security areas, but it does mean you need to optimize your resources, starting with your network firewall team. Resource optimization involves the automation and streamlining of operational processes and management workflows so that your IT team members can be freed up to focus their time, skills, and expertise on priority projects. Furthermore, optimizing your resources helps preserve your budget while eliminating budgetary conflicts and slashing administrative costs.

Banks and financial institutions have faced a spate of regulations centered on capital adequacy since the financial crisis started in 2008. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) initiated a series of reforms to strengthen risk, capital and liquidity rules across banks. Among the important changes recommended are new rules for calculating Tier I and Tier II capital and the inclusion of additional risk measurement components for market risk, liquidity risk and counterparty risk. Despite these changes, a key drawback of the Basel framework is its focus on historical capital adequacy. While being useful, it does not help assess the impact of stress events on banks from an ex-ante basis. Hence regulatory agencies in several jurisdictions have mandated banks to define a forward-looking capital plan that incorporates stress scenarios.

It is no secret; security and compliance are at the top of the list of concerns tied to cloud adoption. According to a recent 2017 Cloud Security survey to over 350,000 members of the LinkedIn Information Security Community, IT pros have general concerns about security in the cloud (33 percent), in addition to data loss and leakage risks (26 percent) and legal and regulatory compliance (24 percent)1. The number of reported breaches in enterprise datacenter environments still far exceeds the reported exposure from cloud platforms, but as businesses start using public clouds to run their mission-critical workloads, the need for enterprise-grade security in the cloud will increase. Public cloud environments require a centralized, consolidated platform for security that is built from the ground up for the cloud, and allows administrators to monitor and actively enforce security policies. The tools and techniques that worked to secure datacenter environments fail miserably in the cloud. Se
