In 2017, a tech’s typo at one of the world’s largest cloud services providers took a large swath of servers offline for four agonizing hours. According to one estimate, it cost S&P 500 companies $150 million—and U.S. financial-service companies $160 million—in lost revenue. Of course, the financial hit is just one aspect of an outage. The true cost also includes lost productivity and damage to your reputation. As our reliance on ITC infrastructure increases, the cost of an unplanned outage will only go up.

Delivering personalized customer experience remains the top business challenge for communications service providers (CSPs). Ovum's recently published 2018 ICT Enterprise survey saw almost all CSP IT executives interviewed identify delivering personalized customer experience as one of their three most important business challenges for the next 18 months. This trend emphasizes the high priority CSPs place on how customer relationships are managed. However, several factors have an impact on CSPs' ability to identify and then deliver customers' core needs. These include understanding the data sets they should focus on; collecting, cleansing, and consolidating these data sets; and having the right expertise to mine the data sets.

Companies with multicloud services are outperforming their peers on a number of metrics — and achieving the key objectives that led them to the cloud services model. Take a look at the IT ecosystem of any company today and there’s a good chance you’ll find it includes offerings from several cloud services providers. That’s certainly the case at mid- to large-sized companies with at least 500 employees, according to a recent survey conducted by IDG Research. The survey of 100 senior IT professionals found that 59% are already multi-cloud adopters — that is, using computing and storage services from two or more cloud providers. Another 31% of respondents say they plan to become multi-cloud organizations in the coming 12-24 months, with only 10% still in the “consideration” phase. The survey results also reveal interesting insights into the drivers behind multicloud adoption. The perennial desire to reduce IT costs remains important, but the respondents rate two other factors.
