In this era of cloud computing, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT), firms are testing new product offerings that combine elements of content, software, services, and hardware together. Like the innovative products themselves, the rulebook on monetizing them is evolving. Firms are shifting from one-time perpetual sales or fixed monthly subscriptions to consumption models that blend onetime, subscription, and usage-based billing (see Figure 1). The move to subscription and consumption business models is pervasive in almost every industry. From retailers selling subscription box sets to industrial equipment manufacturers charging based on consumption, the increase in experimentation of alternative business models is extraordinary (see Figure 2). While B2C disrupters like Netflix and Zipcar have gotten more media attention, the growth of subscription billing plat

Given the evolution of past major advances in wireless-LAN technologies, it should come as no surprise that products based on the still-in-development IEEE 802.11ac standard are now appearing across the board, from residence to enterprise. Just as was the case with 802.11g and 802.11n, the standards-development process is now far enough along that the semiconductor community is shipping in volume, the Wi-Fi Alliance has been able to issue an initial interoperability specification, and system-vendor products offering up to 1.3 Gbps are now available at prices very close to those of 802.11n APs but with on the order of a 30% improvement in price/performance on a spectral-efficiency basis and from 100% to more than 200% in performance overall.

HRIS solutions designed for very large organizations can be costly to set up and maintain, and often require the services of an army of consultants to keep them operational. Systems designed for very small organizations concentrate on either HR functions such as attendance and compensation, or on benefits management, but usually lack the ability to integrate the two areas. To be a practical investment choice for a mid-tier organization, a satisfactory HRIS solution must have its HR and benefits functions highly integrated. It must be agile so it can easily be kept aligned with the constant change in compliance laws, and it must be robust and secure, built on a tried and true platform foundation.

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is an industry standard network management protocol for managing wide area and local area networks. It is easy to use, cost-effective, and is built into most networking devices. One of SNMP’s best assets is its use of in-band management, yet, this is also its biggest weakness.

More than ever before, IT managers need to secure equipment and facilities against a variety of intrusive conditions that could cripple critical operations, resulting in system malfunctions, loss of data or intellectual property, damage to mission critical hardware or even theft of valuable physical assets. Such conditions often include environmental events, failure of air conditioning systems, power outages, and untoward human actions.
