With the current state of the economy, IT executives are being asked to stretch their budgets in order to keep their businesses profitable. In 2008, Median IT spending per user fell to $6,667 from the previous year's $7,397, according to Computer Economics. This represents a 6.2% reduction, consistent with the fact that IT managers were supporting an increasing number of users without corresponding increases in IT spending. IT spend continued to decline in 2009 and uncertainty and caution is still prevalent in 2010.

Do attitudes to IT adoption vary depending on your seniority within a business? And could this be holding back adoption of technology? These are key questions explored in this paper, which compares the views of mid-level ‘hands on’ IT managers with those of senior directors within British companies. Across both groups, there is a sense that UK business in general is too wary of implementing new technology. But there is a significant divergence of opinion when it comes to a range of factors, such as the extent to which companies invest in new technology, stay on top of the latest tech, and understand its importance to the success of the business. A pattern emerges, whereby the senior leaders within companies are far happier than middle managers with the status quo around technology adoption. And IT managers even suggest that this might be driven by self preservation on the part of senior leaders.

Despite a number of compelling reasons to move away from annual plans and budgets, many CFOs are reluctant to make the change. They fail to recognize that there are alternative (and less dysfunctional) ways of driving performance improvement and making managers accountable for performance. CFOs need to implement systems that provide managers at every level with the capability to make fast, well-informed decisions. They need to replace annual planning cycles with more regular business reviews that enable managers to see trends, patterns, and "breaks in the curve" long before the competition.

In 2006 the world economy was booming, partly on the back of triple-A investment innovations. Then, suddenly, the boom ended. What fascinates the authors is the fact that almost no one saw the 2008 economic crisis coming. In this article, the authors come to terms with the reality that, in economics and business, accurate forecasts aren't possible. Therefore, they say, managers need to develop a different attitude about the future.

Too remedial. Too retrospective. Too static. Too irrelevant to the team leader. Too time-consuming. Such are the complaints heard repeatedly about Performance Management and Engagement systems. And these don’t even touch on the biggest problem of all: current systems produce a tidal wave of unreliable data. The ratings they yield are based on the notion that, with enough time and training, managers (and peers) can become reliable raters of other people’s skills and competencies. Sadly, that’s not true. A large body of research reveals: 61% of your manager’s rating of you is a reflection of the manager, not of you. Your organization, apparently unaware of this, then persists on paying you, training you, and promoting you—and everyone else in the organization—based on these flawed ratings.

There’s a lot of noise these days about hyper-convergence. IT managers are facing internal pressure to adopt hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solutions to make their departments more efficient and “cloud-like” as well as external pressure from vendors fighting for market share in an increasingly crowded space. While an HCI solution could bring your organization significant benefits, it’s not necessarily simple to implement, nor is it the optimal solution for every use case. To determine if HCI is right for you, first we need a clear definition of what it is and what it does.

IP storage using Internet SCSI (iSCSI) provides opportunity for many organizations looking to extend existing Fibre Channel SANs to stranded servers, or looking to deploy Ethernet-based SANs. It can reduce costs by allowing IT managers to take advantage of existing, familiar Ethernet networks. Microservices are a type of software architecture where large applications are made up of small, self-contained units working together through APIs that are not dependent on a specific language. Each service has a limited scope, concentrates on a particular task and is highly independent. This setup allows IT managers and developers to build systems in a modular way. In his book, “Building Microservices,” Sam Newman said microservices are small, focused components built to do a single thing very well.

In this white paper, John Pescatore of SANS Institute explores how DDoS is used as part of advanced targeted attacks (ATAs) and describes how DDoS detection and prevention tools and techniques can be used against ATAs as well. Today’s DDoS attacks, as damaging as they are, sometimes mask even more threatening and dangerous advanced targeted threats. The good news is that some of the same tools that can detect the footprints of DDoS attacks can also find the telltale signs of ATAs. To be successful, though, enterprises need to coordinate their use of both types of logs and adjust their monitoring parameters correctly. They must also eliminate operational gaps, such as unclear lines of security authority, and limit the use of managed security services that can deprive enterprise security managers of the data they need to detect and stop DDoS attacks and ATAs.
