"Enterprises throughout the world are rapidly digitizing their operations and adopting a multicloud environment. Unfortunately, legacy WAN architecture models often do not provide the scale, flexibility or agility required to support this transition. Enter SD-WAN. No single platform will be able to deliver every piece in the jigsaw for every type of enterprise and every application-specific set of requirements. The key is to select vendor partners whose platforms are sufficiently open, modular and comprehensive in their functionality and components that they will be able to adapt to enterprises’ increasingly varied, flexible and exacting networking and compute requirements going forward. Only by doing so will they secure the ability to stay ahead in a multicloud future."

"SD-WAN largely exists today to support two key enterprise transformations: multicloud and the software-defined branch (SD-Branch). Multicloud has changed the center of gravity for enterprise applications, and with that, has changed traffic patterns too. No longer does traffic need to flow to enterprise data center sites or central internet peering points and breakouts. That’s because most traffic from users and devices in the enterprise campus and branch today goes to cloud-based applications scattered across a host of clouds. It’s neither economical nor efficient to haul traffic over WAN-dedicated links to a central enterprise site. So to optimize the cost and performance of multicloud-bound traffic, modern WAN edge routers, often called customer premises equipment (CPE), are now equipped with hybrid WAN links and routing. Hybrid WAN interfaces may include WAN provider-dedicated links such as MPLS, as well as direct internet links over xDSL, broadband and 4G/LTE wireless."

Driven by the need to save money, improve agility, and take rapid advantage of emerging technologies to improve internal collaboration and customer engagement, organizations are quickly adopting Unified Communications-as-a-Service (UCaaS) and Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS). UCaaS and CCaaS enable businesses to deliver a modern communications environment, without large capital investment, and in a manner that provides for rapid scaling, easy expansion into new sites and geographies, and deployment flexibility. Unfortunately, many enterprise networks are not optimized to deliver the performance and reliability required to support cloud-based applications, including UCaaS and CCaaS. As a result, IT leaders are rapidly adopting Software-Defined Wide-Area Network (SD-WAN) technologies. With SD-WAN’s ability to virtualize underlying network services and to build enterprise-grade WANs using both public (Internet) connectivity and private WAN connectivity, IT leaders can leverage it to su

Digital transformation is reshaping the business landscape faster now than at any other time in history. While it once took decades to disrupt a market, natively digital companies have disrupted their industries in just half a decade. Digitization is creating new winners and losers at an unprecedented rate. Organizations that adopt a digital strategy will leapfrog the competition, while those that do not will risk becoming irrelevant within five years. One important step in becoming a digital enterprise is gaining agility—that is, having the ability to take advantage of market opportunities faster than the competition. Although achieving business agility has become a top goal for IT and business leaders, it cannot be realized if companies lack an agile IT infrastructure to enable it. This is why businesses spent an estimated $14 billion on technology in 2018 to make IT more agile, according to ZK Research. However, one part of IT that has yet to evolve and lacks flexibility is the ente

WAN edge infrastructure is changing rapidly as I&O leaders responsible for networking face dynamic business requirements, including new application architectures and on-premises and cloud-based deployment models. I&O leaders can use this research to identify vendors that best fit their requirements. By year-end 2023, more than 90% of WAN edge infrastructure refresh initiatives will be based on virtualized customer premises equipment (vCPE) platforms or software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) software/appliances versus traditional routers (up from less than 40% today).

The most significant IT transformation of this century is the rapid adoption of cloud-based applications. Most organizations are now dependent on a number of SaaS and IaaS platforms to deliver customer satisfaction and empower employee productivity. IT teams are responsible for delivering a high quality user experience for cloud applications while they struggle to manage a secure environment with advanced persistent threats. The WAN is the fabric to connect and control access between remote users and cloud-based applications. The WAN fabric needs to identify application type, location, apply prioritization and route traffic across the appropriate (multiple) WAN links to deliver on user experience. Different types of users/devices connecting to the cloud (via the Internet) means security policies must be enforced at branch, data center and in the cloud.

The Cisco SD-WAN solution is a cloud-delivered overlay WAN architecture that enables digital and cloud transformation at enterprises. It significantly reduces WAN costs and time to deploy new services, and, builds a robust security architecture crucial for hybrid networks. Enterprises today face major user experience problems for SaaS applications on account of networking problems. The centralized Internet exit architecture is inefficient and results in poor SaaS performance. And branch sites are running out of capacity to handle Internet traffic which is a concern because more than 50% of branch traffic is destined to the cloud. More importantly there are many dynamic changes in Internet gateways and the SaaS hosting servers that lead to unpredictability in performance. The Cisco SD-WAN solution solves these problems by creating multiple Internet exit points, adding high bandwidth at branch locations, and dynamically steering around problems in real-time, resulting is an optimal SaaS

Most organizations are in the midst of some form of digital transformation (DX), transforming how they bring products and services to the market—and ultimately deliver value to their customers. But DX initiatives also bring complexity for the network operations team. With business-critical services distributed across multiple clouds, this leads to potential performance issues, especially at branch locations. Given these realities, it is no wonder that software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) technology is rapidly going mainstream. Unfortunately, SD-WAN is an example of the paradox of DX: transformative technology can potentially move the business to the next level, but the expanded attack surface it creates can expose the organization to significant risk. That is why an SD-WAN deployment, like every other DX effort, should be accompanied by a security transformation (SX) that rethinks outdated principles, broadens protection beyond the data center, and integrates the security archit

Enterprises currently face challenges regarding the price, performance, and flexibility of traditional wide area networks (WANs). Aggressive growth in the adoption of public cloud services (a projected 86% spike between 2014 and 2018)1 is forcing organizations to look elsewhere for a more effective network solution to address distributed traffic across remote sites and branch offices. Some of the specific issues organizations face with their traditional WANs include: - High total cost of ownership (TCO) - Lengthy provisioning cycles - Performance degradation with the growth of cloud traffic - Inadequate redundancy and resiliency - Lack of application-aware connectivity To better manage WAN investments, enterprises are adopting a new approach for their distributed branch office networks. Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) offers improved performance, agility, and operational flexibility plus significant cost savings. But not all SDWAN solutions are created equal.

As enterprise IT considers ways to improve WAN functionality and service levels while lowering costs, the interest in SD-WANs has dramatically increased. But not all SD-WANs are created equal. As new applications emerge, whether hosted on premise or in the cloud, demands on WAN throughput, efficiency, and reliability increase. Performance-driven SD-WANs significantly improve application performance and Quality of Service (QoS) making it even easier for enterprises to justify adopting SD-WAN solutions.
