The General Data Protection Regulation1 is a European Union regulation with the full title of ‘Regulation on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, which repeals Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation)’. It’s the first comprehensive overhaul and replacement of European data protection legislation in over twenty years and could be the most significant regulatory framework to hit organizations since Sarbanes-Oxley in 2002. Its purpose is to replace the varying implementations across Europe of the earlier EU Data Protection Directive with a single harmonized EU regulation. The intended outcome is a standardized set of expectations about how an organization must manage and protect personally identifiable information on employees, clients and other applicable data subjects. Any organization that holds data on EU citizens, regardless of where it is domiciled, within the EU or otherwise, is in sco

The time has come for enterprise risk management to change. Mobile devices have become core to our personal and professional lives, yet most enterprises remain focused on traditional PC endpoints. Although many of the same elements of risk that affect PCs also apply to mobile endpoints, simply extending current PC security controls to your mobile feet is ineffective.

The modern organization has recognized the need to embrace mobile devices in the workplace. Some have fully implemented a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program, while some have adopted a hybrid model of corporateowned and personally-enabled (COPE) devices. Many companies then choose to deploy an Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) or Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution to enable some control of the mobile devices that access corporate data. For companies at this stage of mobility, security is the next critical layer. As Gartner states, “It is becoming increasingly important that security leaders look at the anti-malware, mobile threat defense solutions market, the products available and how they should be used."

How to think about the risk to data from the mobile ecosystem Mobile devices, even those that are corporate owned, are personal. Your CEO uses the same smartphone to send confidential emails, snap family photos, inspect customer records, get directions to meetings, and scrutinize financial reports. Every employee in your organization does the same thing. Your organization's critical data is constantly being accessed by mobile devices, and once it leaves the network you have no visibility into where it goes, and little or no ability to enforce your security policy to protect it. Your organization’s sensitive data has made the mobile ecosystem the new frontier for a wide spectrum of risk that every CISO must now understand. Take a deep dive into all twelve elements of the Mobile Risk Matrix in the interactive table below.

“We don’t have a BYOD programme.” This statement, referencing mobile device usage in the workplace, is a refrain often heard in European organisations that are tasked with securing the privacy of highly confidential data and personally identifiable information, and managing employee authorisation and access to that data. However, businesses often believe that they aren’t actually subject to cyber-threats from mobile devices because, simply, they don’t currently allow personal mobile devices to access their networks. Ultimately, this posture puts data at risk because every company has a BYOD policy whether they like it or not.

For decades, the financial services industry has endured constant change and uncertainty, from the depths of a financial crisis to widespread regulation overhauls. With the advent of more advanced cybersecurity threats, the industry has responded with rapid digital transformation to remain competitive while also pushing the envelope. There’s an alarming digital divide within many companies. Marketers are developing nimble software to give customers an engaging, personalized experience, while IT departments remain focused on the legacy infrastructure. The front and back ends aren’t working together, resulting in appealing websites and apps that don’t quite deliver. We’ve arrived at this misalignment for understandable reasons. Previously, most chief information officers (CIOs) were hired to digitize and bring order to companies’ internal systems and processes. They saw websites as marketing channels and were happy to let chief marketing officers (CMOs) oversee that province of technology. They had, and still have, plenty to do just to keep internal operations running smoothly. Marketers soon got into the habit of developing not just content, but also software programs to better reach and transact with customers. But now that websites and apps are becoming cornerstones of the business, the stakes are too high to al
