Virtually every organization understands that its successful operation depends on the continuous availability of its applications. Most companies rely on internal applications-ranging from enterprise resource planning to payroll systems-to keep the wheels of their enterprise turning. They also depend on external-facing applications for everything from selling products to their customers to automating the supply chain with suppliers and partners. The failure of any of these mission-critical applications could be catastrophic to a business.

As the pace of business continues to accelerate, forward-looking organizations are beginning to realize that it is not enough to analyze their data; they must also take action on it. To do this, more businesses are beginning to systematically operationalize their analytics as part of a business process. Operationalizing and embedding analytics is about integrating actionable insights into systems and business processes used to make decisions. These systems might be automated or provide manual, actionable insights. Analytics are currently being embedded into dashboards, applications, devices, systems, and databases. Examples run from simple to complex and organizations are at different stages of operational deployment. Newer examples of operational analytics include support for logistics, customer call centers, fraud detection, and recommendation engines to name just a few. Embedding analytics is certainly not new but has been gaining more attention recently as data volumes and the freq

For many years, companies have been building data warehouses to analyze business activity and produce insights for decision makers to act on to improve business performance. These traditional analytical systems are often based on a classic pattern where data from multiple operational systems is captured, cleaned, transformed and integrated before loading it into a data warehouse. Typically, a history of business activity is built up over a number of years allowing organizations to use business intelligence (BI) tools to analyze, compare and report on business performance over time. In addition, subsets of this data are often extracted from data warehouses into data marts that have been optimized for more detailed multi-dimensional analysis.

Infrastructure matters. Today’s business environment is increasingly dominated by mobile and cloud-based platforms, and by the skyrocketing volume of new data. And with 70 percent of the average organization's IT budget being spent on operations and maintenance, infrastructure must be simplified, adaptive and responsive. Those are the characteristics of the software defined environment: IBM’s optimized, customized, virtualized IT platform designed to replace systems that assign server, storage and network resources manually. This eBook serves as an essential introduction to SDEs: what they are, and why your organization needs them now more than ever.

Companies now need to evolve quickly, which means being able to move some or all business operations to an existing or new ERP instance quickly and inexpensively, anywhere in the world. Small companies are increasingly likely to become multi-national as emerging markets take on larger roles in revenue growth. Larger companies continue to optimize and innovate through organic development, as well as through mergers and acquisitions. In this increasingly competitive environment, the ERP deployment choice is a signi?cant advantage for companies seeking an agile response to constantly changing and often-volatile market conditions. In particular, cloud-based ERP systems are increasingly seen as an effective means for companies to economically deploy new ERP or expand IT operations as their commercial reach broadens globally.

Today’s consumers expect instant access to communications services whether they’re in the office, at home, or on the road. With data speeds increasing and international roaming costs decreasing, data usage is rapidly growing. Telecommunications Service Providers (TSPs) are under pressure to deliver more services to more people and approach 100% uptime all while lowering prices to consumers. Traditional relational databases can’t meet the requirements for massive scalability, availability, and fault tolerance that the rapid growth in data usage and rise of big data demands. Read this solution brief to learn how Riak excels at these. Riak is a distributed NoSQL database optimized for big data. Riak meets many of the challenges you may be facing with your own service operations systems.

Industry 4.0 promises a whole host of benefits to food manufacturers — from reduced errors and more uptime to unprecedented visibility into operations at every step in the process. But for many food manufacturers out there, this is uncharted territory. Getting machines of various vintages connected and communicating seamlessly with each other and with existing control systems can seem like an expensive and difficult proposition. Coding and marking is a great place to start for many companies, since SKU proliferation is putting greater demands on packaging lines and introducing additional opportunities for human error. In this brief white paper, Domino examines five key issues with integrating coding and marking systems that often present challenges for food manufacturers along the road to Industry 4.0.

New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. Download the white paper to learn more.

Network Centric Operations (NCO) recognises the demand for pervasive decision-making in the modern battlespace. NCO provides the ability to leverage information networks to generate a more dynamic and agile decision-making space. An important dimension of this approach is the technological flexibility to quickly move the decision-making authority hierarchically or geographically as the situation demands. A fundamental enabler to this approach is the concept of a services orientated architecture (SOA). The use of industry-standard IT architectures provides the means of ensuring that systems can be provisioned rapidly, can be shared as appropriate, and can give the flexibility and response times required within such challenging environments.
