The four pillars of computing — cloud, mobility, social, and analytics — are driving new levels of network innovation in datacenter networks. These forces are now buffeting the datacenter along with virtualization and the Internet of Things (IoT), resulting in sweeping changes in traffic patterns that expose the limitations of traditional networks and their operational models. To become a resource rather than a bottleneck to overall datacenter performance, the network must deliver not just exceptional performance and scalability but also unprecedented automation and orchestration that can yield agility, flexibility, and service velocity. This Technology Spotlight examines these key trends and discusses the role that Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) plays in addressing these ongoing challenges for enterprise IT and network managers.

The term “perfect storm” is used to describe when several forces come together and create a large, single event that has transformative effects. A technology perfect storm took place in the 1990s when Internet services, low-cost home computers, browsers and affordable broadband all came together and created the Internet revolution. This revolution launched an entirely new economic model that sparked new ways of doing business, changed the way we work, and allowed us to blend our personal and professional lives. At first, these new ways of working were the exception. But the transformation to an Internet-based work style is now complete, and this style has become very much the norm. Businesses that embraced the Internet in its early days gained a significant advantage over their competitors; those that did not became irrelevant very quickly.

The world’s largest organizations are adopting cloudbased infrastructure and services at a dizzying pace. Software as a service (SaaS) offerings such as Salesforce.com and Microsoft Office 365 are among the more popular cloud-based services. When moving services to the cloud, data centers are no longer local, so the end user experience can suffer. A poor or congested Internet connection between the user and the cloud service will mean sluggish application delivery that puts a damper on user productivity and ultimately threatens application usage.

Trust and consumer confidence is the foundation upon which the Internet has been built. Leading commerce and financial services companies worldwide have long used Secure Socket Layer and Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) technologies to secure customer communications and transactions. But with the rise of Web 2.0 and social networking, people are spending more time online and logged in, and they are communicating much more than just their credit card numbers. Unfortunately, Web security practices have not always kept pace with these changes. Many organizations use the SSL/TLS protocol to encrypt the authentication process when users log in to a website, but do not encrypt subsequent pages during the user’s session. This practice is risky because it leaves website visitors vulnerable to malicious online attacks, and can result in millions of users being unknowingly exposed to threats simply by visiting a trusted website. This white paper discusses the imperative need for Always On S

The internet has grown rapidly from a random collection of mainly academic networks and military control and routing protocols into a global, integrated and sophisticated commercial utility. No longer simply an 'Information Superhighway', it has extended to embrace voice telephony, video and mobile communications as part of a converged network. Connection options and services have expanded, with opportunities for internet service providers (ISPs) to add value beyond simply forwarding bit and bytes.

Small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) across the UK have exploited the internet as it has evolved from an interesting medium for the technology-aware to an essential commercial platform. With this increasing importance, and the internet’s ability to extend the reach of a business, it is valuable to realize precisely what different internet service providers (ISPs) offer before buying. This includes evaluating service level and support capabilities and understanding how these vary throughout the UK.

When evaluating the pros and cons of DSL and cable modem Internet access, enterprises should factor speed, cost, installation, consistency and security into the decision-making process. While the right access choice is a function of location, availability and service offerings, DSL is often the better option for remote workers, satellite offices and traveling employees.
