While more and more enterprises are using analytics to guide their decision-making processes, most midsize businesses continue to rely on old-fashioned decision-making techniques like trial and error. The reason for this is simple: advanced analytics solutions can be very complex and expensive to implement, leading midmarket businesses to assume that the benefits of analytics are beyond their reach. IBM has created a new analytics solution that is designed specifically with the needs of midmarket businesses in mind. The solution, IBM Analytic Answers, gives midmarket businesses the opportunity to take advantage of a sophisticated analytics platform, backed by IBM expertise, while also staying within their budgets.

Buy-and-hold strategies can actually add costs to the datacenter, as systems age in place. Not only do hardware maintenance and software maintenance fees rise, over time – but the aging of applications also costs the organization money. Investing in a transition from POWER5 to POWER7 resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of more than 150 percent over three years. An insightful and and compelling discussion by IDC that reviews the primary reason for maintaining current systems -- Return on Investment. IDC studied IBM Power Systems sites that remained on the POWER5 platform long after its initial introduction in 2004. When comparisons to the succeeding generation of POWER7 are made, customers have found that the increase in scalability and performance of POWER7 systems, combined with a reduction in server "footprint" size and overall electrical requirements, resulted in significant reductions in ongoing costs, or opex, per 100 end users supported.

Simply put, software defined storage is the abstraction of storage services from storage hardware. This term is more than just marketing hype, it’s the logical evolution of storage virtualization from simply being a storage aggregator to the end goal of storage as a service. To achieve this goal, software defined storage needs a platform from which to centralize.

Two years ago Clabby Analytics wrote a report that evaluated Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) and revealed shortcomings in the UCS design, stating that Cisco blade environments are “good enough” computing environment. Since then Cisco made improvements to their system design, but the blade market didn’t stand still waiting for them to catch up as IBM announced a new system design: the IBM Flex System. Continue on to this new assessment from Clabby Analytics that compares Cisco’s UCS blade server offering to IBM Flex System’s in a soup-to-nuts evaluation. Also find out how these two major players compare to the competitors in the blade marketplace.

This IDC analyst white paper discusses an important sea change happening in IT: the development of expert integrated systems. Converged systems are becoming increasingly important in the systems market. Similarly, convergence is occurring in middleware core runtime services for application development and deployment that are being unified as an enterprise application platform. Given the similarity in derived value propositions, converged systems and platforms are coming together as integrated systems; with the addition of capabilities focused on deployment, management, and optimization, integrated systems become expert integrated systems.

For many years, companies have been building data warehouses to analyze business activity and produce insights for decision makers to act on to improve business performance. These traditional analytical systems are often based on a classic pattern where data from multiple operational systems is captured, cleaned, transformed and integrated before loading it into a data warehouse. Typically, a history of business activity is built up over a number of years allowing organizations to use business intelligence (BI) tools to analyze, compare and report on business performance over time. In addition, subsets of this data are often extracted from data warehouses into data marts that have been optimized for more detailed multi-dimensional analysis.

Infrastructure matters. Today’s business environment is increasingly dominated by mobile and cloud-based platforms, and by the skyrocketing volume of new data. And with 70 percent of the average organization's IT budget being spent on operations and maintenance, infrastructure must be simplified, adaptive and responsive. Those are the characteristics of the software defined environment: IBM’s optimized, customized, virtualized IT platform designed to replace systems that assign server, storage and network resources manually. This eBook serves as an essential introduction to SDEs: what they are, and why your organization needs them now more than ever.
