The asset and fund management industry has grown signifcantly in the last decade, with surveys indicating about 65 percent growth since 2007, to over USD 80 trillion in assets under management worldwide. As its importance to the world financial system – linking those with money to invest with enterprises and activities that require funding – is increasingly recognized, so both the industry and the regulators that police the sector become more prominent. The industry and regulators are coming under pressure from a range of “external” voices – demanding investors and consumer groups, clamoring political and economic needs, changing priorities and hopes of civil society, an increasingly noisy press, the explosion in social media and the rapid growth of new technologies. This sea of voices is directly influencing the regulatory agenda and increasing expectations on the industry. A fundamental rethink of firms’ mindset and investment offerings is required.

Financial services organizations operate under a host of regulatory standards. This makes sense, as the assets and information managed by these firms are valuable, sensitive, and targeted by sophisticated cyber attackers daily. Compounding these challenges is the large volume of personally identifiable information (PII) that financial organizations handle regularly. PII is subject to many compliance regulations, notably the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which regulates not only the processing of personal data, including PII, relating to individuals in the EU, for also any organization that processes personal data of EU residents. For US banking consumers, Section 5 (Unfair or Deceptive Acts or Practices) of the Federal Trade Commission Act and numerous state regulations enforce basic consumer protections, which financial organizations must also uphold.

Performance evaluation is coming of age. Once a narrow, back office role focused solely on crunching returns, it has become ever more integrated into the DNA of investment firms. Both internally and externally, performance evaluation adds value, helping senior management make key judgement calls where the difference between the right solution and the wrong solution is the difference between growth or decline. The performance analyst of the future will provide valuable input into nearly every area of an investment firm. What began as a mathematical task—calculating investment returns—is morphing into something much broader. The objective of performance evaluation today is determining what is behind the return being analyzed. What were the key drivers—allocation or selection? What risk was taken to achieve the return? Was it skill, or was it luck, that produced the return?

As firms spend 76% of their IT budget on maintenance and support, they will naturally invest in BSM solutions that will reduce costs, enable ITIL, and provide an optimal ROI.

Small and midsize retailers around the world are seeing their businesses transform in a variety of ways. These firms, typically with fewer than 1,000 employees, have been transforming themselves as customers seek new types of engagement and as suppliers expect higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness. New business models and new competitors are changing the way retailers do business. Rather than simply react to new threats, successful retailers are leveraging technology in new ways to sharpen business practices, improve agility, and better serve customers while strengthening the role of retailers in the supply chain. Through digital transformation including the effective engagement of the internet of things (IoT) to track inventory, the opportunity to maintain and gain competitive advantage can be significant.

There’s strong evidence organizations are challenged by the opportunities presented by external information sources such as social media, government trend data, and sensor data from the Internet of Things (IoT). No longer content to use internal databases alone, they see big data resources augmented with external information resources as what they need in order to bring about meaningful change. According to a September 2015 global survey of 251 respondents conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 78 percent of organizations agree or strongly agree that within two years the use of externally generated big data will be “transformational.” But there’s work to be done, since only 21 percent of respondents strongly agree that external data has already had a transformational effect on their firms.

Midsized firms operate in the same hypercompetitive, digital environment as large enterprises—but with fewer technical and budget resources to draw from. That’s why it is essential for IT leaders to leverage best-practice processes and models that can help them support strategic business goals such as agility, innovation, speed-tomarket, and always-on business operations. The widespread use of mobile devices — smartphones and tablets — provides anytime, anywhere computing and communications resources for individuals worldwide. Both smartphones and tablets have made the transition from a personal resource, acquired and supported by consumers, to a professional resource, provided and supported by employers. For midsize firms around the world, those with 100–999 employees, mobile resources play a key role in improving workplace productivity as well as allowing greater flexibility in how and where work is done. New collaboration resources also allow staff in different locations to work together as efficiently and effectively as staff in the same office. The challenge for IT management is how best to coordinate the different collaborative and mobile resources and provide secure management of mobile devices and collaboration tools while enhancing workforce agility and productivity.

For midsize firms around the world with 100 to 999 employees, advanced technology plays an increasingly important role in business success. Companies have been adding cloud resources to supplement on-premise server, storage, and networking capabilities. At the same time, growth of mobile and remote workers is also changing how companies need to support workers to allow them to be as productive as possible. Like larger companies, midsize firms must make sure that they are effectively coordinating on-premise, public cloud, and private cloud capabilities. Unlike large companies, though, midsize firms are limited in both financial and technical resources to design and coordinate effective solutions to meet specific needs. Rather than invest in a major overhaul of their IT environments, midsize firms have to move incrementally, supplementing current resources with new cloud and on-premise capabilities that provide the performance needed to prosper in an increasingly competitive environment.
