At its Build conference in May, Microsoft took the wraps off Cosmos DB, the new incarnation of its existing cloud-based Azure DocumentDB NoSQL database. With a nod to the dramatic, Microsoft terms Cosmos DB as its biggest database bet since SQL Server; it is positioning it as its flagship cloud database, suited for use cases ranging from security and fraud detection, to IoT (consumer and industrial), personalization, e-commerce, gaming, social networks, chats, messaging, bots, oil and gas recovery and refining, and smart utility grids. Cosmos DB is a good example of how cloud platform providers are rethinking databases for scalable, elastic environments and commodity infrastructure. The platform that is most comparable is Google Cloud Spanner, but each of these databases is engineered for different purposes: Cosmos DB as a globally distributed operational database and Spanner as a globally distributed SQL-supporting OLTP database. The highlights of Cosmos DB include its flexibility in

Cloud computing has ushered in a golden era for software companies. The cloud’s low barrier to entry allows creativity to flourish, especially for software developers who are creating applications directly on cloud-based infrastructure. Cloud-based infrastructure enables developers to do what they love: solve business problems and bring innovative new ideas to life, using their choice of tools. In a Software as a Service (SaaS) model, applications can easily be deployed to a cloud service, and delivered to clients who appreciate the ease of access and low cost. The cloud model relieves the developer and the enterprise IT professional from the burden of managing or maintaining capital-intense infrastructure. But the cloud’s low barrier to entry also allows competing software providers to enter the market every day, from every sector. Independent software vendors, or ISVs, are pressured by increased competition to deliver their applications faster, with greater functionality and ease of

Too often, the debate about IT is dominated by a narrow focus on near-term objectives: shrill cries claim that the business will stop (or fail) if a feature isn’t added to the ecommerce site, if the mobility platform isn’t improved, if the network and compute back end aren’t upgraded, if storage and database performance isn’t accelerated. Often, these changes are truly essential, and demand immediate attention. However, midmarket firms can’t assemble a meaningful strategy from point responses to near-term issues. Increasingly, midmarket enterprises are finding that continued operational success requires an “agile-cloud” – an agility-oriented, cloud-based IT strategy that addresses the three core changes faced by midmarket firms: the changing nature of business infrastructure, the accelerating pace of change in business, and the expanding scope of IT.

It used to be that you would build out your datacenter with all the right considerations in place, purchasing equipment that was sized to meet the needs of your organization for today and the near term future. Change used to be merely planning for capacity upgrades or network expansion, or migrating to the latest application version—or more simply put: things we could measure, control and manage. With the advent of the cloud, the rise in cyber-based threats, and the need to do more, faster, we’re witnessing a perfect storm that is making it more and more difficult for the enterprise to plan for change, and to maximize the investments that they make in their IT infrastructure today. This eBook will focus on considerations that you should make when deciding on an ADC solution that can not only survive these changes, but help create opportunities for innovation as the enterprise strives towards digital transformation. This guide will help you understand the changes that are currently unde

The world of IT is undergoing a digital transformation. Applications are growing fast, and so are the users consuming them. These applications are everywhere—in the datacenter, on virtual and/or microservices platforms, in the cloud, and as SaaS. More and more apps are now being moved out of datacenters to a cloud-based infrastructure. In order for an optimized and secure delivery of these applications, IT needs specific network appliances called Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs). These ADCs come in hardware, virtual, and containerized form factors, and are sized by Network Administrators based on the current and future usage of applications. The challenge with this is that it’s hard to foresee sizing or scalability requirements for these ADCs since users are constantly increasing, and applications are consistently evolving, as well as moving out of datacenters. Complicating matters, most ADCs are fixed-capacity network appliances that provide zero or minimum expansion capability

Global Transit Network architecture is critical to the success of your AWS cloud deployment. Implemented correctly, a Global Transit Hub enables traffic to securely flow from on-prem to VPCs, or from VPC to VPC, in a way that minimizes complexity and cost and maximizes agility and availability. Implemented poorly, it becomes a choke point that is time-consuming – and costly – to maintain and troubleshoot. As part of our fact-filled AWS Bootcamp series, Aviatrix CTO Sherry Wei reviews seven best-practice topics for Global Transit Network architecture. Free Evaluation Checklist In addition to the slides, you’ll also receive a handy spreadsheet-based checklist with 50 architecture and business goals to consider when evaluating solutions for your own Global Transit Network. Who Should Watch? Anyone responsible for connectivity of cloud resources, including cloud architects, cloud infrastructure managers, cloud engineers, and networking staff.

Thanks to numerous, headline-making incidents in recent years, cybercrime has risen toward the top of the concern list for many organizations—and the customers with whom they do business. You’ve heard many of the stories. Major health insurers, such as Anthem, Premera BlueCross and CareFirst had personal information for millions of their customers stolen. Sony Pictures experienced a breach that not only embarrassed employees and adversely impacted the release of the high-profile film, “The Interview,” but also damaged systems and applications—making it extremely difficult for the company to conduct business. The list goes on. Some you maybe haven’t heard, like the one about CodeSpaces, a provider of version management services to developers. When attackers were able to gain access to its cloud-based management consoles, they deleted the company’s entire infrastructure and backups—ultimately forcing CodeSpaces out of business. The bad news for organizations like yours is, thanks to the

Most IT professionals today recognize that enterprise IT will be hybrid in the future. To provide the optimal foundation for each workload being deployed, the hybrid IT environment will include cloud-based infrastructures—from multiple providers—co-existing alongside infrastructure within the enterprise data center or a hosted environment. But not all hyperconverged solutions yield the same results. The right hyperconverged infrastructure can meet your IT needs both today and well into the future. In this paper, we will talk about where your data center needs to be in the next five years to meet changing business demands, and how the roles of IT professionals will evolve. We will also review “hyperconvergence” models, and how they can best meet your IT needs both today and in the future, as well as the benefits you can expect along the way. Finally, we discuss what to look for in the right hyperconverged provider, who will position your IT department for success.

Use of cloud computing services continues to grow rapidly as organizations migrate business applications and data to cloud-based software, platform and infrastructure services. Gartner estimates 2017 will see growth of 18% in spending on public cloud services and that cloud adoption will infuence more than 50% of IT spending through 2020. Deloitte Global predicts that by the end of 2022 more than half of all IT spending will go to IT-as-a-service providers. In the 2016 edition of this survey, 56% of the security professionals responding said limitations on access to collect incident response data and evidence for forensic analysis was a key challenge to securing the cloud. Sixty-two percent said they were concerned about unauthorized access by outsiders, and 59% said they worried about access by other cloud tenants. Of the 10% who reported being breached, half blamed stolen credentials or compromised accounts.

The first event in the Partnering with Certainy Webinar Series, "Customer Demands at the Edge." Trends like IoT are driving customer experience expectations in a way that demands resiliency in local edge environments. As a result, we’re seeing a rise of edge computing (compute power coming out of the cloud and into the access layer). Customer demands manifest themselves differently based on things like company size and segment. For example, a retail customer’s business imperatives might look different from a doctor’s office. But one thing remains constant: A standardized, redundant, and repeatable physical infrastructure can protect the availability of these now-critical access-layer IT assets. DDoS attacks can impair your website, tarnish your brand, and impact your bottom line. Conventional security products like firewalls and intrusion prevention systems and newer cloud-based scrubbing services can’t protect your DNS infrastructure against today’s increasingly sophisticated attacks. The best way to defend against DDoS attacks is to trust the operation of your DNS infrastructure to a managed service provider that lives and breathes DNS. Best-of-breed managed DNS providers operate global anycast networks that mitigate DDoS threats to keep your online business up and running.
