Oracle has just announced a new microprocessor, and the servers and engineered system that are powered by it. The SPARC M8 processor fits in the palm of your hand, but it contains the result of years of co-engineering of hardware and software together to run enterprise applications with unprecedented speed and security. The SPARC M8 chip contains 32 of today’s most powerful cores for running Oracle Database and Java applications. Benchmarking data shows that the performance of these cores reaches twice the performance of Intel’s x86 cores. This is the result of exhaustive work on designing smart execution units and threading architecture, and on balancing metrics such as core count, memory and IO bandwidth. It also required millions of hours in testing chip design and operating system software on real workloads for database and Java. Having faster cores means increasing application capability while keeping the core count and software investment under control. In other words, a boost

Your enterprise runs its critical applications on Oracle Databases, and as an enterprise IT leader, maintaining the performance and availability of your databases is among your top priorities. Any degradation in performance or loss of data could result in serious business disruption and loss of revenue, so protecting this vital asset is a must. There are many causes of data loss— administration errors, system or media failures, cyberattacks, and more—but we often overlook design flaws in the very systems meant to protect data: general-purpose backup systems. Many existing data protection solutions fail to meet the demands of critical databases because they treat them as generic files to copy as opposed to specialized resources. Taking a generic approach to database backup and recovery not only exposes you to the risk of data loss, it also negatively impacts performance and makes it difficult to recover within acceptable timeframes.

Modern technology initiatives are driving IT infrastructure in a new direction. Big data, social business, mobile applications, the cloud, and real-time analytics all require forward-thinking solutions and enough compute power to deliver the performance required in a rapidly evolving digital marketplace. Customers increasingly drive the speed of business, and organizations need to engage with customers on their terms. The need to manage sensitive information with high levels of security as well as capture, analyze, and act upon massive volumes of data every hour of every day has become critical. These challenges will dramatically change the way that IT systems are designed, funded, and run compared to the past few decades. Databases and Java have become the de facto language in which modern, cloud-ready applications are written. The massive explosion in the volume, variety, and velocity of data increases the need for secure and effective analytics so that organizations can make better

The Software in Silicon design of the SPARC M7 processor, and the recently announced SPARC S7 processor, implement memory access validation directly into the processor so that you can protect application data that resides in memory. It also includes on-chip Data Analytics Accelerator (DAX) engines that are specifically designed to accelerate analytic functions. The DAX engines make in-memory databases and applications run much faster, plus they significantly increase usable memory capacity by allowing compressed databases to be stored in memory without a performance penalty. The following Software in Silicon technologies are implemented in the SPARC S7 and M7 processors: Note: Security in Silicon encompasses both Silicon Secured Memory and cryptographic instruction acceleration, whereas SQL in Silicon includes In-Memory Query Acceleration and In-Line Decompression. Silicon Secured Memory is the first-ever end-to-end implementation of memory-access validation done in hardware. It

In today’s IT infrastructure, data security can no longer be treated as an afterthought, because billions of dollars are lost each year to computer intrusions and data exposures. This issue is compounded by the aggressive build-out for cloud computing. Big data and machine learning applications that perform tasks such as fraud and intrusion detection, trend detection, and click-stream and social media analysis all require forward-thinking solutions and enough compute power to deliver the performance required in a rapidly evolving digital marketplace. Companies increasingly need to drive the speed of business up, and organizations need to support their customers with real-time data. The task of managing sensitive information while capturing, analyzing, and acting upon massive volumes of data every hour of every day has become critical. Performance testing has always been about ensuring the scalability of a software application. Until the arrival of the first performance test automation solutions in the late 90’s, performance testing was a manual process that was difficult, if not impossible, to test in a consistent and reliable fashion. The arrival of these new tool sets suddenly allowed software testers to turn discrete user actions into scripts that could be combined and replayed as test scenarios. Solving the consistency and reliability challenge, software testers could now repeat the same test on demand while reinforcing and imposing some new requirements.

IDC's research shows that, worldwide, over 70% of enterprise cloud users currently rely on multiple clouds (public and/or private) to support a wide range of applications and workloads. Efficient management of these resources depends on IT operations and DevOps teams having access to consistent, accurate infrastructure performance monitoring data and reporting that span the full set of on-premise cloud infrastructure and public cloud IaaS services. CA Technologies recently announced new capabilities for CA Unified Infrastructure Management (CA UIM) that allow the product to more fully address the monitoring needs of complex multicloud infrastructure as part of delivering on CA's vision to fully enable the agile DevOps in the application economy.

Kenzan, a software engineering firm that specializes in building scalable, data-driven solutions, often leverages DataStax Enterprise (DSE) for customers that have high expectations for both performance and value. That means making careful, informed choices when designing the cloud infrastructure that applications run on. Controlling costs is always a priority for businesses that rely on AWS for running DSE. With AWS, it can be tempting to solve performance issues simply by adding more resources until the problem goes away. However, this “solution” results in increased costs which quickly add up over time. In this white paper, Kenzan and DataStax identify some of the key factors to consider when building out infrastructure on AWS, outlining practical steps you can take to optimize performance with DSE on AWS while keeping costs in check.

For many organizations, managing network vulnerabilities and risks is a lesson in frustration. Vulnerability scans are typically conducted in response to compliance mandates, and they can reveal up to tens of thousands of exposures—depending upon network size. Scan results are often a complex puzzle of misconfigured devices, unpatched software, and outdated or obsolete systems. And security administrators must struggle to quickly identify and remediate or mitigate the exposures that pose the greatest risk.
