Behind the vast majority of legitimate alerts sent to the IT security team is an attacker who exploits multiple attack techniques to infiltrate your infrastructure and compromise your critical data and systems. Targeted multi-phased attacks include a series of cyber attack chain steps: recognition, vulnerability analysis, operation and, finally, exfiltration of critical business data.

For security analysts, a flow of security alerts is an inevitable consequence of the digital age. Moreover, as alerts can signal business-impacting incidents, the enterprise’s security staff cannot be complacent. Staff must be relentless in gathering logs, setting alert parameters, assessing alert severity, and then prudently responding to incidents with countermeasures.

Dallas-based Parkland Health & Hospital implemented a Zebra technology solution to create a mobile-enabled workforce at its new state-of-the-art hospital campus. That mobile solution enabled the nursing staff to focus on what’s most important — patient care. The solution gave nurses the ability to communicate in real time, access right-now information and take the right action with that information. Parkland’s leadership was able to track all patient activities from positive patient identification and specimen collection to laboratory specimen tracking and pharmacy medication administration. Additionally, hospital staff communication with voice and secure texting, along with patient alerts and alarms—all help increase patient safety, care and satisfaction.

There is a tectonic shift in the way we work. We expect the same kind of intuitive, tactile experience with our workplace technology that we now take for granted with our smartphones, tablets and gaming systems. We expect our devices to talk to each other and update automatically. Virtual meetings should be as easy to set up as a video chat, and whatever we need to do our jobs should be as easy to tailor as a streaming music or video application.

The velocity of technology infrastructure change continues to accelerate, putting serious stress on Security Operations (SecOps). This has forced security folks to face the fact that operations has never really been their forte. That’s a bit harsh, but denial never helps address problems. The evidence is fairly strong that most organizations are pretty bad at security operations. How many high-profile breaches could have been avoided if one of many alerts was acted upon? How many attacks were made possible by not having properly patched servers or infrastructure? How many successful compromises resulted from human error?

As the number and variety of threats mushroom, an Ovum survey has found that security teams have become physically unable to respond in an appropriate way to the ones that actually matter, with 42.3% of respondents in ASEAN countries saying they deal with more than 50 alerts each day. Shockingly, for 7% of organizations, that figure rises to between 100 and 1,000 threats a day. The Solution? Ovum believes that security decision-makers should invest in centralized management capabilities, enabling them to control the disparate security tools in their infrastructure, and address the challenge of prioritizing the volumes of daily alerts they receive. Download the Report to find out what else Ovum has discovered about security practices in ASEAN.
